Huei-Wen Ferng,

Distinguished professor  and Chairman

The Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering was created on August 1, 1999. Its original faculty was comprised of instructors from the Departments of Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Information Management. In 2001, the Department launched two-year and four-year undergraduate programs. Both programs focus on the development of software systems and applications. Both the Institute and the Department emphasize information theory and state-of-the-art technologies, with special focus on industrial applications. We also emphasize a multidisciplinary approach, the ongoing modernization of laboratory facilities and teaching methods that place importance on both theory and practice. We foster the development of multidisciplinary research teams and approaches in order to cultivate effective management and collaboration within large cross-cutting projects. The Department places strong emphasis on the potential for collaboration with industry to help accelerate the development of the information sector in Taiwan.
At present, the Department has 8 professors, 5 associate professors, and 9 assistant professors. We have an enrollment of 565 students, including  257 undergraduate students, 250 Master's students and 58 doctoral candidates.

The institute, established in 2006, is to integrate the education and research resources for electronics and photonics in NTUST. With its existing master and doctoral program, the institute is committed to educating high-level engineers and researchers for the optoelectronics industry. Its current 20 full-time teachers and well-equipped laboratories support cutting-edge researches and teaching in four major fields: Green energy(energy saving and/or substitute energy), image display and lighting, optical networks, and optoelectronics. In addition to the advanced researches, the institute also promotes joint researches and projects among academia and industry domestically and internationally.
